The grounds, objectives and practices concerning handling of the situation that followed
the downturn
There seems to be plenty of talk concerning the employment rate of highly educated
people in Finland. The society seems to do its best to further educate these educated
people and the excuse is sometimes that they wouldn't otherwise manage in the working
life. It is not difficult to assess the situation from trainer's point of view; it is nearly
impossible to create a learning solution that adds to value for diverse group of highly
educated people. In the meanwhile the trainings remain inaccessible to those who would
likely benefit from knowledge updates.
Another issue worth mentioning is that the actual amount of vacancies does not really
increase only by educating the unemployed. Neither do we achieve durable economic
growth by creating positions that are unnecessary; it is private sector's duty to aspire
towards efficiency and healthy business environment. At the moment, the private sector,
the source of growth and welfare, is going through structural change and need for new
successful business ideas and enterprises is imminent. At the same time, the existing
system does not truly encourage entrepreneurship. Many parts of the current rule and
practices might actually do the opposite. Do we really want to lose the investment we
made in intellectual assets, or would it be time to take all thinkable steps to release the
innovative capability? Every moment counts.
