IPR and future development 24.4.2014What is the value of an item that contains no intellectual property? Does such an item exist? Is there actually other property than that based on knowledge? Is the value embodied in an item, or should we rather talk about perceptions and a complex environment where the value is determined through contribution of several factors related and unrelated to the item itself and to its production? In absence of markets, it clearly is difficult to define monetary value for an asset. The more abstract, transient and changing the asset under valuation is, the more irrational the valuation process becomes. In my projects related to knowledge based capital, I take a closer look on the questions stated above and then move forward to methods that are used in valuation of intangible assets. 22.3.2014 Intellectual property has been an area of growing importance for a long time. There are several issues ongoing that can serve as basis for assumption that some aspects of intellectual property law would be a subject to change in the future. Think about, for example, software industry maturity, internet, globalization, or the new opportunities that automatization will bring. Are we heading towards ever increasing globalization or will the future development provide a basis for increasing amount of local solutions and diversity? One can consider, for example, the role of R&D and innovation in future economy. What will be the major initiative for progress and how will it appear in practice? Will the accumulation of value add be altered and how? What kind of solutions will co-operational issues and related legal framework provide? My interest for the topic comprises both proactive and reactive approaches. Johanna Sandman
